Royal Gorge Opens for Season with 19 Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Trails

DONNER SUMMIT, Calif. (Dec. 2, 2015) — Royal Gorge, North America’s largest cross-country ski resort, has opened for the season with 19 trails and 17 kilometers of groomed terrain.

The Donner Summit resort’s open trails include terrain for skate skiing, traditional cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Groomed trails open for skiing include tracks near the Summit Station Lodge, in Van Norden Meadow and in the Kidd Lake Track system west of Summit Station Lodge.

Royal Gorge completed extensive trail work this summer, adding new trails as well as widening and improving existing trails. New trails that will open this year include Easty’s Escape, Thor’s Loop, Thor’s Hammer and Thor’s Belt. The resort also added snowshoe trails from Summit Station lodge that climb to sweeping views of the resort.

All-day trail passes are priced at $33 and half-day trail passes are $28. Royal Gorge is also offering a package that includes rental equipment, a lesson and trail pass for $65. Cross-country skiers can also purchase a $25 Advantage Pass which gives passholders $5 trail pass discounts all season long (as well as season-long $15 ticket discounts and direct-to-lift access at Sugar Bowl Resort).

Royal Gorge’s hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weather forecasts are predicting that several inches of new snow will fall at Royal Gorge during a winter storm on Thursday. Check for an update on new trail openings, conditions and a full grooming report.
