surroundings BOWL and consistently implements environmentally-sound
policies and practices to improve and maintain the quality of the environment.
Sugar Bowl has maintained an aggressive conservation program and was
recognized in 2011 by the Keep Sierra Green Council for its efforts to minimize
waste, conserve energy and water, and implementing pollution prevention
Continued & Recently Completed Initiatives:
• Purchase 100% renewable energy in Renewable Energy Certificates
(RECs) from 3Degrees
• Diverted over 21% of waste last year by recycling
• Subsidize a free shuttle from Truckee to Sugar Bowl/Donner Summit
• Provide a free Ride Share board on their web site to support carpooling to
the resort
• Sustainable Slopes and Keep Winter Cool Programs
• Preserve wetlands and protect water quality
• Forest Stewardship
• Adopt-a-Highway program
• Habitat protection during development
• Annual Environmental Awareness Day
• Replaced all electronic water coolers with water purifiers in office sinks
• Installed occupancy sensors for lighting in many offices and public areas
• Installed strip curtains in all refrigeration and shipping & receiving dock to
reduce energy consumption
• Re-commissioned the HVAC system in the Judah Day Lodge to improve
efficiency and reduce propane consumption
• Include environmental considerations in purchasing decisions:
-Purchase 100% green cleaning products
-Purchase non-disposable and 100% recycled content or compostable
food service products
-Purchase 30% recycled content office paper
-Purchase bio-diesel for use in all licensed highway vehicles
-To date, have replaced 50% of snowmobile fleet by purchasing 4-stroke snowmobiles to replace 2 stroke snowmobiles on an ongoing basis
-Have eliminated all tier 0 snow cats by replacing with tier 3
-Purchase more efficient fan guns for snowmaking

Sugar Bowl’s recycling program continues to grow every year. Last year the resort
diverted 21% of its waste by using blue bags to recycle mixed paper, aluminum,
glass and plastic. Cardboard, batteries, printer cartridges and cell phones are
placed in a designated recycle bin. All scrap metal is recycled at the maintenance
shop, all vehicle oil picked up and recycled, and all fryer oil is picked up by the El
Dorado Hotel and Casino, recycled as bio fuel to help power the casino.
Sugar Bowl’s environmental efforts are designed and implemented by the resort’s
environmental committee. The committee, comprised of resort employees, meets
monthly to brainstorm ideas and audit existing programs.
